It’s reported — not yet confirmed — that Nvidia has agreed to buy Hugging Face, the open, shared hub where the world’s freely-available AI models live, for nearly thirteen billion dollars. In this segment we look forward, calmly, at what it means when one of the digital age’s great commons gets enclosed: why an open library that belonged to everyone and no one was so valuable, why we keep building shared spaces only to watch them bought and fenced once they matter, and why the commons — of the internet, of knowledge, of these new tools — only survives if the people it belongs to still remember that it’s theirs.
